Once for always learning technique

Abstract: This is one of the most powerful learning methods invented in 1996 by a man called Robinson. In this method, it is trying to create a background in the mind before studying, and make the learning process more active and easier.

In the following, various stages of the method are referred:

Pre-reading:

First pre-read the book you want to study. Try to use the following method for pre- reading:

  • Take a fast and quick look at text.
  • Find critical and key points.
  • Review questions and exercises to review the lesson.
  • Read the first and last paragraph and summery in a cursory manner.

Making question:

Create questions in your mind about the subject. To do this, you can:

  • Make titles and headings as question.
  • Ask yourself: "What do I know about it?", "What did teacher say about it?" and questions like these.

Reading:

Read the text completely. When reading:

  • Seek answer to the questions that you constructed in your mind.
  • Answer the questions on the last part of the lesson.
  • Underline the important points.
  • If you didn’t understand something, read it again.

Recounting and definition of content:

After reading a section is finished, recount its contents.

  • Repeat memorized lessons or summarize it.
  • In repeating material, use a technique that fits your learning technique, and keep in mind that the more you use your senses, you will better understand the content.

Learning power will be triple by seeing, speaking, hearing.

And this power will be quadruple by seeing, speaking, listening and writing!

Reviewing:

After you have read the material thoroughly and recount for yourself, it's time to review the content.

  • First day: immediately after the definition and retelling phase, review materials quickly for five minutes.
  • Next 24 hours: scroll through book and look at the important notes, do it for 5 minutes.
  • A week later: for 5 minutes review the material. Spend more time for things that you think are more difficult.
  • And so review the content every once in a while, so you won’t have problem at the exam.

Remember:

Those who read a content six times subsequently compared with those who do it 6 times, each time 5 minutes, have less learning percent.

Because the mental processing power goes higher at intervals.

Good luck

In today's world that is the era of communication and the power of ideas, one cannot go with the same old way. In today's world, study is the necessity of progress. It must be understood that one of the major causes of academic failure is that their study method is not based on the principles and in correct way. Of course it does not mean that students do not study, but because of lack of observing the learning principles and concentration and inability to remember, their productivity and efficiency will be reduced, so result in the loss of morale and reduced self-esteem and chronic fatigue and boredom of the study. It should be noted that the study is an acquisition process and has different parts such as approaches before study, preparedness and approaches after study.

The study has features that the most important one for you dear students, is to be accustomed to study during the academic year and it is good that this habit is based on its standard and conditions.

"The most important effective methods for the study"

  1. Identify your target before starting the study
  2. Plan. Act according to the plan, proper planning is how to make the most out of the time and resources available. Planning will lead you to have effort and perseverance. If you cannot complete the program on time, do not despair. Make sure to have compensatory hours in your program. Implementation of programs is more important that the planning. It is better that the planning is done by students themselves. (According to psychological and physical conditions and by knowing the objectives, interests and strengths and weaknesses of students)
  3. Do not forget discipline in the study. Because the basis for any plan and organization depends on its discipline and observing it is the main condition for study, because it causes concentration and remembering.
  4. Creating positive thoughts – self-confidence and belief in the ability (self-esteem) prevent you from anxiety and worrying that follows failure.
  5. Mindfulness - to remember and remind materials, you should have mindfulness. Otherwise, your memory and mind cannot remember anything. So strengthen your focus and attention so the lessons is stick in your mind deeper. Of course the power of concentration is highly dependent on your will so that’s why when you read a material, you will have no problem in concentration if you are interested in (sport – music – cinema – theater etc.)
  6. Interest and motivation – as said previously if you read the lesson with interest and motivation, you will better understand and remember them. Try to start from easy and attractive parts to increase your interest and motivation.
  7. Mental break - do not study much when tired, because to study effectively and efficiently, the brain must be well prepared to be able to remember. If during the study, you have lost your concentration, don’t continue it because you will be bored.
  8. Understanding lessons: to remember more, you should understand the material and repeat its summary in your mind because if a material is memorized like parrots, it will be soon forgotten, because it does not remain in long-term memory.

It must be understood what remains in long-term memory is the meaning of content, then try to understand the material well so you can easily remember it.

  1. Emotional peace of mind: to remember lessons, you should definitely have a peaceful mind and take away all the anxiety and nervous tensions when you have all exams. Otherwise a lot of anxiety makes learning difficult. To feel peace of mind, with a positive attitude think that you can learn and remember whole the material.
  2. Exercise your mind: by keeping your brain active, the brain nerve cells have opportunity to make new connections and associate with each other more. In this situation, you will increase the recall of memory and you will prevent the loss of memory. (Through simple tasks like crossword, puzzle, chess - playing music and even non-college study etc.)
  3. Exercise your body: Start the days with exercise because physical movements and exercises strengthen your memory. Because exercise increases blood circulation in the brain and results in more efficiency to learn materials and doing exercises.
  4. Enough sleep: enough sleep reinforces learning and memory and also improves concentration and recalling (6 to 8 hours per day). Studies show that night studying is a very ineffective way to learn new knowledge, while good sleep can help consolidate memory and better performance on the exam.
  5. Proper nutrition: the human brain for its daily activities requires food and oxygen to have the necessary energy. Proper nutrition (vegetables and fruits containing antioxidants) is one very important factor in increasing the efficiency of memory and concentration, because it increases the ability of brain cells to communicate with each other.
  6. Avoiding eating fatty foods is recommended before studying for exams. Because it reduces blood supply to the brain (blood supply is mostly done by the gastrointestinal tract) and in this way thinking and concentration power will be reduced.
  7. Enough time to study: consider enough time to study the material, because the amount of learning is closely related to the time spent learning it.
  8. Proper use of time: because lost time cannot be recycled and time cannot be saved. Time is a capital that is lost if not used. While financial capital is not the same.
  9. Study time: basically there is no rule for the study time. So you can read whenever convenient. But all research suggests that three times are important in learning:
  1. Early morning (because the mind has no previous prohibition) and is very comfortable to learn contents.
  2. Late at night (because you sleep after studying, and you have no latter prohibition, and the learned material have the opportunities to go from short-term memory to long-term memory and learning will be increased.
  3. Two hours before sunset (due to reduced cosmic rays and the sun's relationship with the earth) it is easier to focus. Therefore, you are recommended that if possible study at the three time and it is better to consider specific times during the day to study and try not to pay to any other task but studying at that hours. Otherwise, you can read whenever convenient. Do not involve yourself with the study time in any way.
  1. Body position in the study: sitting behind the desk is the best study. Absolutely do not lay, because it destroys mindfulness and creates sleepiness.
  2. Reading room: it should be quiet and as little as possible be empty of posters and objects that distract you. Use a specific place to study help mindfulness. However, in some cases it is possible to change study methods from time to time. For example, you can try to change your place – change the study time and - in any way with the addition of an element and a new status to your study process, make your learning more effective.
  3. Light in study room: for study place, it is better to use two combined optical lights (white and yellow spectrum) so the eyes are not tired, commonly using fluorescent lamps alone is not enough and it is better when studying to turned around on, not just the point where you are studying.
  4. The proper beginning for the study: after providing the conditions for pre-study for better learning, start from easy and attractive sections, then go to difficult parts. Or by reviewing the previous parts, start studying to build interest and motivation in you.

It is recommended to do it at the earliest opportunity and at any time properly. The best guarantee for tomorrow is to do your today task well, and study well right now, at this moment.

  1. Meticulous attention to academic study: to transfer the information from short-term memory to long-term memory, your attention should be concentrated on what you study and to actively focus on it. Because "attention" is one of the major components of memory. It is good to refer to the “long-term memory”: the material is archived in brain that can present unlimited information (recent events and information or even information related to years ago). New information is stored in long-term memory through connection and one gains new materials based on his previous information
  2. The link among the materials: try to link between new content (which you want to learn) and what you already know to learn better so that the new content will be in your mind as organized and tidy. You can relate the phrases or material you want to remember to something that is very familiar or pleasant to you (mnemonics) that can be positive imaginations, innovative things (such as a poem or sing rhymes and even humor and jokes. The mnemonics help you in remembering what you study better with mental review.
  3. Organize in your mind: organize the content you studied in your mind (information is organized in the memory as a cluster), try to classify the relevant concepts and phrases to classify the materials, because tips you study will be remain in mind and their recalling will be more convenient the more it is regular and systematic.
  4. Visualize concepts and materials in your mind as much as possible to improve memory power. That is for better learning the lesson and easier recall, try using mental visualization i.e. visualize your goals in your mind and prevent any doubt in reaching them.
  5. Using maps and pictures: in order to better visualize in your mind, try to consider pictures, maps and charts so contents stay in your mind more. Even if there is no such images, you can create them or highlight the important content.
  6. Try expanding information in your mind and review it to stick in the long-term memory that is first read the key phrases and have a great attention to them, then, study the details of their meaning. Repeat this action so it will be easier by recalling information.
  7. Pay more attention to complex subjects of books or pamphlets. Usually it is easier to recall initial or final material of a season, and gradually when you come up with the fundamental principles and complex concepts of chapter, spend more time to remember it.
  8. Simplification: divide the difficult and complex parts into smaller and easier ones to be understood.
  9. Underlining important phrases: this is very effective in retrieval and browsing easier and in creating the necessary focus.
  10. Taking note and summarizing key points increase attention. By taking notes and summaries you can remember material that requires thinking and focuses more. Writing important points on a sheet (tips sheet) and its definition for others in your language is very important.
  11. Repeating and reviewing the content and recitation: the most important and most basic step in effective learning is repeating content. Try to read the material you've read and you think you have learned for another person who can correct your mistakes and hint you the sections you have left out. Or teach new concepts to another person because reading aloud is very effective in memorization and with this method, you will better understand and remember. Reviewing immediately after the definition and recounting phase is done in 5 minutes and quickly (review once a week).
  12. Avoid rushed memorization of content for exam: consider regular meetings to study to have enough time to process information appropriately. Research confirms the fact that students who study regularly recall the content much better than those who read all of the materials in a long session.
  13. Briefing: you should be skilled in this field and practice briefing because it not only saves time but also adds mindfulness.
  14. Study actively: to focus on the study. Otherwise you will be like a driver that because he drives at a down rate, you can do a lot of different things while driving, so its concentration on driving will be considerably less.

"Good luck"
